Maintaining your new roof

Your new Calgary roof has been installed by the experts at A two Z Windows and Doors. You’ve got it perfectly matched with your home and no more worries about leaks, runoff or damage to your soffits, fascia, eaves and siding.

Chances are, your roof replacement occurred because of wear and tear–thanks in part to the variant temperatures and extreme weather conditions we experience in Calgary and area. Wind, hot sun, hail, rain, snow, ice all test the integrity of your investment.

To ensure you are taking care of your roof and exterior materials throughout their warranties, JJ O’Connell and his team at A two Z Windows and Doors offers this helpful checklist by season:

Spring

  • Safety First. If using a ladder, secure it, and always use fall protection and safety glasses.
  • After snow and ice are gone do a visual inspection to check for damage–missing or rolled shingles or flashing.
  • Check for tree limbs that will soon bloom and deposit leaves or small branches. Trim these so they don’t scratch your shingles.
  • Inspect eaves, gutter and downspouts to make there is no debris or blockages. Invest in gutter guards to make it easier.
  • Do not pressure wash your Calgary roofing, as it can take off granules from the singles. Use a garden hose and jet spray instead.
  • If your gutter has pulled way from eavestroughs, secure it back in place to prevent water from entering along your inner walls.
  • Check flashing and seals around vents, pipes, flues, chimney and skylights.
  • If your roofing is 10 years or older, look for shifted shingles, which can indicate the adhesive needs a refresh.
  • Clean out gutters and eaves, removing any leaves, debris, growth or moss. Inspect for cracks and leaks. Seal before Spring rains arrive.
  • Mold Alert: Look for discoloured streaks on the shingles–could be mold, fungus or rust from flashing. This can eat away at the shingles.
  • Check your runoff along your shingles while spring snow or rain comes and goes.
  • Soffits and fascia can also rust from a moldy roof. Clean off with rust remover and gentle scrubber.
  • Any questions regarding your Calgary roofing warranty or request for repairs, call the A two Z Windows team at 4703-257-DOOR (3667).

Summer

  • Safety First. If using a ladder, secure it, and always use fall protection and safety glasses.
  • It’s best to start early in the day before wind picks up or it gets hot.
  • Check your roof shingles, especially after a storm. If there are missing items, call A two Z Windows and Doors for a quick inspection.
  • Inspect eaves, gutter and downspouts to make there is no debris or blockages.
  • Trees will have filled out by now, so trim any excess branches that touch your roof, siding or eaves.
  • If your roofing is 10 years or older, look for shifted shingles, which can indicate the adhesive needs a refresh.
  • Remove any green moss, branches, weeds growing on your roof, in the gutter, eaves and flash. (an telescopic broom head can work).
  • Do not pressure wash your roofing, as it can take off granules from the singles. Use a garden hose and jet spray instead.
  • If your gutter has pulled way from eavestroughs, secure it back in place to prevent water from entering along your inner walls.
  • Check flashing and seals around vents, pipes, flues, chimney and skylights.
  • Summer is the ideal time to patch, coat and seal roofing shingles.
  • Mold Alert: Look for discoloured streaks or spots–could be mold, fungus or rust from flashing. This can eat away at the shingles.
  • Soffits and fascia can also rust from a moldy or discoloured roof. Clean off with rust remover and gentle scrubber.
  • Any questions regarding your Calgary roofing warranty or need for repairs, call the A two Z Windows team at 4703-257-DOOR (3667).

Autumn

  • Safety First. If using a ladder, secure it, and always use fall protection and safety glasses.
  • Before snow and ice arrive, check for any summer storm damage–missing, rolled shingles or flashing. Patch and seal.
  • Check for tree limbs that will be close to or laying on your roof. Trim these as they can scratch shingles.
  • Regularly clean out gutters and eaves as leaves fall and seal up any cracks with leak guard materials.
  • Autumn is when mold can really take hold. Check shingles for discolouration regularly before snow arrives.
  • Check your runoff along your shingles before any Chinook melting in winter.
  • Ensure downspouts are not leaking and are directed away from walking areas–frozen water is a hazard.
  • Soffits and fascia can also rust from a moldy roof. Clean off with rust remover and gentle scrubber.
  • If your roofing is more than 10 years old, it may be time to get a free inspection from A two Z Windows & Doors in Calgary.
  • Check your attic for any signs of leaks and make sure insulation is up to grade to ensure lower heating bills.

Winter

  • Safety First. If using a ladder, secure it, and always use fall protection and safety glasses.
  • After the first snow and melt, do a quick visual inspection for damage–missing, rolled shingles or flashing.
  • Invest in a telescopic snow shovel for your roof. It can help take some of the weight off your shingles safely.
  • Check the flashing around chimneys, vents, flues, corners, etc.
  • When snow is piled up, look at the melting patterns for hot spots (areas that melt faster signifying heat loss).
  • Clean out gutters and eaves, removing any leaves, debris, growth or moss. Inspect for cracks and leaks.
  • If the gutter clogs, frozen water can damage the system and other parts of your home.
  • Look for discoloured streaks or spots on the shingles–could be mold, fungus or rust. This can eat away at the shingles.
  • Check your runoff during a Calgary chinook to see how your shingles are affected.
  • Soffits and fascia can also rust in between warm and cool spells. Clean off with rust remover and gentle scrubber in the Spring.
